Lionsgate Close to Choosing a Director for ‘Hunger Games’ Sequel ‘Catching Fire’

Catching Fire, the next installment in the Hunger Games franchise, will probably have its director this week. And it’ll be either I Am Legend’s Francis Lawrence or Moneyball’s Bennett Miller.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Lionsgate considered directors Tomas Alfredson, Stephen Daldry, and Tony Scott before narrowing the list down to Lawrence and Miller. The Times and Playlist each reported that Lawrence and Miller are the finalists.

They’re both strong directors, but in I Am Legend, Lawrence proved he has the vision to bring a post-apocalyptic world to the screen – and the chops to pull off that vision.

Whoever gets the job is going to have to hurry: Production begins in August and Lionsgate plans to have Catching Fire in movie theaters November 2013.

Gary Ross, who directed The Hunger Games, chose not to handle the second.
