Lindsay Lohan Officially Set to Play Elizabeth Taylor in Biopic

Lindsay Lohan has been chosen to play Elizabeth Taylor in Liz & Dick, the upcoming Lifetime biopic. The TV movie is based on Taylor’s turbulent relationship with Richard Burton, her Cleopatra co-star and on-again off-again husband number five.

The Hollywood Reporter featured a statement from Lohan announcing the news:

“I have always admired and had enormous respect for Elizabeth Taylor. She was not only an incredible actress but an amazing woman as well. I am very honored to have been asked to play this role.”

The female-friendly cable network has been developing Liz & Dick since last May — but Lifetime didn’t approach Lohan for the movie until January of this year. The 25-year-old Lohan has recently started making a comeback after a troublesome last few years — theft charges, jail stints, rehab, and a recent Marilyn Monroe-esque Playboy spread.

Her return to “Saturday Night Live” in March received mixed reviews. Poking fun of her past legal troubles throughout the episode, Lohan succeeded in appeasing fans and critics alike. Although it wasn’t the most stellar of SNL performances, the hosting appearance served as baby steps in the slow crawl back toward the limelight — and not just in a negative way.

Hopefully her role as Taylor (not to mention her upcoming guest appearance on Glee) will bring back the Lindsay fans used to love. Or are the days of Mean Girls and The Parent trap far behind us?

Liz & Dick, produced by Larry Thompson (Amish Grace), will be Lohan’s first acting role since the 2010 movie Machete. Production begins in Los Angeles in June.
